Astronomical Significance

According to the Indian calendar, every month, Chaturdasi tithi krishna paksha is observed as Sivaratri and dedicated to Lord Shiva. Paksha is a fortnight and Krishna Paksha is the waning phase of the moon. Chaturdasi is the 14th day (tithi) of a fortnight in the Indian luni-solar calendar.
During the Phalguna/Maasi month, chaturdasi tithi is observed as Mahashivaratri. The Sun is in Aquarius (Kumbha) and Moon is in Capricorn (Makara) on that day. Devotees observe fast and night-long vigil completely immersed in the consciousness of Shiva.
